Fn key on laptop locked on

By Patrick Horn ·
I am working on a laptop that has the Fn key stuck on. When the user uses the j,k,l,u,i,o,p keys, the letters that come up are the ones that come up as if you are pressing the Fn(function)key. How do I trun this off? How did this get turned on so I can tell him not to do it again? The computer is a Dell Inspiron 2600 Running Win XP Pro. Thanks

What we have here is a NUM Lock situation. Press & hold the FN key while pressing F11. This should return your keys back to letters.

Is it physically stuck? Pull that key out and use compressed air to clean it out.

Check BIOS. See if anything in there is funky. Turning off that laptop for 5m or so should reset anything that could be on (SCROLL LOCK, NUM, CAPS etc).

Hold down the following 3 keys: Shift + Ctrl + Num Lock. That should return the KB to normal.
