Folder locked - Access denied

By shep5_7 ·
I am the new IT guy for a company, the previous person left 8months ago, but i need to access his my documents folder to get documents. And of course I don't have his password and the account should be disabled anyway but i doubt that it is. How can i gain access to this folder?

If you can't get in as an administrator, try importing the files using the application. It's not SUPPOSED to work, but frequently it does. For example, if it's a Word file, open a blank Word file, got to Insert | File and browse to the folder--you'll be able to tell right away if it's going to work.

obtain or reset the administrator password on the PC and the files will be yours. I have had good luck with http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/

this works well on all types of NT/2K/and XP systems. Have used it at least a dozen times and has not failed me yet.

adding the drive to another computer will most definitely work. A bootable Linux forensics distro such as HELIX will do the trick.

However, not sure if this would help if the user had setup Windows EFS (Encryption). The good news is that EFS is very easily bypassed.

Is he still a user on the computer? His account may have been Private.
Check out this KB for some relief:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881/en-us

You might also try adding the hard drive as a slave to another computer.
Couple of thoughts

Sorry got ahead of myself on first point. If is no longer a user in Accounts try adding him back with your own password or no password.

If the machine he used is still there and has not been wiped, I would log into another machine with your id and password and then access his machine through the administrative shares on the computer (this assumes your account has administrative rights). This will give you full rights to the files and you'll be able to copy or move them to where ever you need them.
