Locked

folder lockout

By Seadogs ·
We have a folder on one of our servers that appears to be completely locked out. We can't identify who created it or set the permissions. We've tried logging on as administrator both over the network and locally. Locally there is no permissions tab at all, and anything you try to do ends up with an access denied error. Remotely the permissions tab shows up, but we still get access denied when we try to view permissions or take ownership. Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions on how toget into this folder or get rid of it? Also we can't create a new folder, we get another access denied on this server. Thanks for your help!

log on as an local admin. to the server and try to take ownership of the whole drive instead of just the folder.

what you need is a tool from the reskit designed for just this purpose takeown.exe.
I've used this myself and it works well. run takeown directoryname. you may need to run cacls or xcacls from the command line to apply new access rights after taking ownership. that takes care of the folder, but the fact you are also getting an error creating a folder is worrying, and suggests there may be a deeper issue here. BTW one common cause of a folder becoming inaccessible to even the administrator is the owners account being deleted from the domain.
