Folder Redirection Error

By TPCosmo ·
I have a windows 2000 network with all windows XP client machines. I have configured group policy to redirect the My Doc's folder to the users home share. For some reason I am getting an error in the application log on the client machine. The error is:
Failed to perform redirection of folder My Documents. The files for the redirected folder could not be moved to the new location. The folder is configured to be redirected to <\\wfg-server-1\%username%\My Documents>. Files were being moved from<C:\Documents and Settings\WFGMGR\My Documents> to <\\wfg-server-1\wfgmgr\My Documents>. The following error occurred while copying <C:\Documents and Settings\WFGMGR\My Documents\Adobe> to <\\wfg-server-1\wfgmgr\My Documents\Adobe>:
The security descriptor structure is invalid.

I cant seem to figure out why im getting an error like this. I actually deleted the Adobe folder in a troubleshooting effort, but it just errored out on the next file.
Every user in the OU governed by this policy gets the error.

Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Tom

Hi,
This is covered in technet article Q232692

search on that number at microsoft.com/technet

apparently it's a problem with user rights on the destination folder. Hope this helps...

I already saw that one, and it didnt help too much. I think my problem started when I manually created the my docs folder in each users home share. I should have let GP build it for me......

The folder that you created on the server for the redirection of the users My Docs folder needs to be shared and rights to access it etc given to all of the users you intend to use it. Be carefull that you do not allow the users to browse each others folders in the share restrict them to their own.

I created the folder, when the best practice I found out is to let the group policy create the folder, that way the proper permissions are set automatically.

On your windows 2000 Server you must share the user folders and set their permissions up, don't forget to add Dollar signs to the end of the share name so the folder is then hidden from the rest of the users. This share name then has to be entered into the users properties in Active Directory.

Hope this helps

Why do you need to hide the folder from other users if the proper permissions are set up?
I have the users home directory set up properly, which is what I think you are trying to say when you say 'This share name then has to be entered into the users properties in Active Directory.' The problem is with Group Policy, not the usres account properties. I am trying to make the users 'my documents' folder reside automatically in the users home directory, and have it be transparent to the user. I know I can individually redirect that folder to anywhere I point it, but I want to use GP to accomplish the task, and save me TONS of work. Thanks anyway.....
