Folders appear during startup

By FrenchFries290 ·
I have an HP Provilion 7840 PC with WinMe pre-installed.
The o/s became corrupted. I did a complete restore from the
restore CDs shipped with the computer. Now, during
startup, over the HP logo, two file folders appear and a
file transferoccurs for about two minutes. A message box
appears - "Preparing system, this may
take a few minutes". After the transfer is complete the
computer boots to the desktop, and everything works fine.
I did not receive this before the restore was done.
What's happening? How can I fix it? I'm experience
troubleshooting hardware and software, but this is a first
for me. Thanks for your support.

My guess is that something did not complete during the installation process. Go to your C:\Windows directory and look for a file named Wininit.ini and see if there is anything in it. This file is used when applications do an install and cannot update system files that are in use. Then, the next time Windows is started it reads this file and runs any commands in it.

If the file is present and is not empty try renaming it and rebooting. Since you can boot there should not be anything left in the wininit.ini file to do on every bootup. You shouldn't have any problems.

Enjoy,
