Font do not display in formatting tool b

When I open Word I do not see the fonts displayed in the formatting tool bar. I have had Office 97, Office 2000 and Office XP and this problem has been carried over. I am running on Windows 2000. The fonts are available in my Excel program but not Word. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have installed a printer as suggested by Microsoft and that didn’t work either.
