Force inherit permissions

By honu95 ·
Hi all,

XP Pro SP2 here. A shared folder called "Share", share perms to UserA. Owner moves(or copies?) an existing folder on his HDD to the "Share" folder. UserA cannot access this folder because permission denied. Is there a way to force inherit share permissions on folders that are copied/moved (if there's a difference) into the "Share" folder?

Thanks in advance, this shouldn't be too hard.

If a folder is shared and then moved, it loses the share (a popup box will come up explaining this). The share will need to be recreated

This is a good thing to remember nonetheless!

OK, so I find out that share perms do not inherit. Does this mean any folder moved into a shared folder needs to be "re-shared" and set with proper share perms?

Thanks W2tekman, however my issue is a bit different. I'm not moving the "Share" folder but an existing non-shared folder "into" the "Share" which has no pre-configured share perms.

Sorry if this was unclear.

be sure that you are setting both the share and NTFS permissions on the shared folder - they are cummulative.

that said, if a folder is copied, it will inherit the permissions of the folder it is copied to. if a folder is MOVED it retains the permissions that were already set on it and they will most likely have to be modified.

It's good to make a chart of what perms are carried on when copying, moving, and if to a new partition, etc. It's different for encrypted files and compressed files as well!

Thanks allthegoodnamesweregone,

I keep forgetting that moving will retain the perms of the original file location, and copying will inherit the destination perms.

I also found out that in the security tab > Advanced , by checking/ticking "Replace permission entries on all child ojects with entries shown here that apply to child objects" and then apply, it updates perms in the entire directory tree. Thanks for your responses!
