ask your administrator

by Neon Samurai In reply to Forgot the root password ...

If it's a work machine then ask the IT administrator or check your server documentation from when it was setup.

If it's a home machine, you may be in for a reinstall. /home is a seporate partition from where the OS files are installed then you should be able to reinstall without loosing user config settings and whatever user files are saved under the home folder.

It's a *nix so cracking the root account won't be remotely easy which sucks assuming you have a valid reason for accessing the root account.

If your not the owner of the machine and your looking for help cracking it than you've come to the wrong place since this is a professional's forum.

Easy Peasy!

Assuming the computer isn't doing anything such as serving database operations or such, press the <STOP> key and <A> at the same time. You should now see an "ok" prompt. Insert your operating system disk into the CD drive and type boot cdrom -s. At this point you'll need to manually mount /etc and edit the password file.
