Forgotten password/changed?

By kchamberlin ·
I have a pc that needs work done to it but can't get past the Windows Password! I know what I set it up as - someone changed it. Nobody remembers who or what or why. It is sitting now asking for the windows password and I can't get past it!!! This is a Windows 2000 Pro. Any help? I don't want to **** the machine away.

Admin Rights

by f1dotcom In reply to Forgotten password/change ...

Hi,
You have not specified whether you have admin rights on the computer. If you have admin rights on the computer, then you can logon using the administrator profile and change the password. If you do not have the admin password, it is almost impossible to reset the password.

Yes I have Admin rights. It is not taking the password I set up for it. I can't even get to a command prompt. I have a tool if I could get there!

The following tool from Sysinternals will reset the password if you have physical access.

Sorry about that! The authors page is better anyway... tells which versions to use (and not use) for 2k -something I have not done. It explains the whole thing though... it may or may not work for you.

Reinstall

by chutchings In reply to Forgotten password/change ...

One way to regain administrative rights is to reinstall W2k without formating the drive. You won't lose any data on the drive and you'll be able to acces it all.
