Assuming the drive is formatted as a NTFS volume, this is what I do:

CAUTION: back up any critical data and settings before proceeding!!!

Boot from a W98 startup disk.

Run fdisk, and delete the NON-DOS partition.

Exit fdisk.

Boot from the XP CD.
Follow the prompts to install XP, and set up the boot partition as desired.

BACK UP ALL CRITICAL DATA YOU NEED FIRST

Just put in the CD for Windows XP, follow the instructions to install XP, but when it comes to the screen asking on which partition to install it on delete all partitions on the disk, you dont mention anything about patitions so i imagine you only have one.
Now create a new partition, accepting the defaults.

now you can install XP on that partition, it should ask you to format the partition first, DONT do a quick format, better to do a more complete one.

XP should then go on to install.
