First, is the drive recognized by the BIOS at POST?

If not, make sure that the cables and master/slave jumpers are set/connected correctly.
And, that the BIOS is set to auto detect your new drive.

Before you can format a drive, you need to use fdisk to partition the drive.

I recommend running fdisk from a boot floppy.

If your existing drive has more than 1 partition, and you want to keep the 2nd partition as the "D" drive, you must partition the entire 2nd HD as an extended partition. Then set up the logical drives to suit your needs.

After you reboot from fdisk, you will be able to format the logical drives on the 2nd HD.

The only place I use to format harddrives is in Disk Administrator. From there you can chose the size for partition and type of format (I.E. fat, NTFS).

Good luck

Have you tried using disk administrator yet? Go there and see if it will recognize it. You can format the drive there, assign it a drive letter, and choose fat or ntfs.

Hope this helps

Hi,
It is not that complicated.
Use the disk administrator utility and see there Presence of the new hard drive. Select that drive and right click delete that partition and commit changes than right click on the same place and format the drive.
I Hope this will solve your problem.

Thanx & Regards
Abhinav

During the cold boot, booting after powering up the PC, go into the to BIOS of the PC. Select the IDE HDD AUTO DETECTION. Let the BIOS program detect all the hard drives. Select the choices with a "y" in paranthesis, (Y). Before you even start the PC, know what the jumper settings should be for a Master & Slave hard drive. You will proably have to change the jumper on the initial hard drive which was installed in the PC. It would normally be set to "Single".
