Forwarding E-mail on Exchange 5.5

By dean ·
I am using Exchange Server 5.5, fairly new to using it and a little stuck. I have done a little looking around in the help provided in Exchange and have not seen anything that applied to my question. So here it is.

In my office I have a person who is gone all the time. I have an mailbox setup for them in recipents and the mail to them just sits there for weeks until they come back in to the office and logs on to the office network with their laptop. They have an AOL account setup for theease of access across the country. What do I have to do in Exchange Server so any e-mail received at the office address, for this person, is forwarded out the their AOL address?

Thanks a ton for your help.
Dean

Forwarding E-mail on Exchange 5.5

I'm pretty sure of this because I've done it for some of my users, but I can't check it now because opening Exchange Administrator on my network takes so darn long and slows down my server (I'm near Boston, the mail server is in NYC).

Anyway, check the user properties. There's a tab there for Delivery Options or some such. Near the bottom there's a space to enter an alternate email address to deliver to, along with the option of sending to both th eoriginal and the alternate.

Good luck!

You can create a rule from the out of office assistant in Outlook that will do many things with the mail including forwarding or just reponding to the sender that the recepient is out of the office. It works great, I just returned from Vacation andam pretty happy with it.

Dean,

There are 2 ways you can approach this. #1 is to go into the user information in Exchange Administrator and go to Delivery Options and specify where to foward the mail to. You may also want to create a custom recipient and have the mail forward to there.

#2 Is to create an OWA server (Outlook Web Access) and provide a web based platform for users to access there mail while outside of the office.

I would recommend #2 just due to the fact that you are providing a little security onthe server in the sense of not forwarding documents back out to the internet, hopefully you are also backing up your mail server and can keep users from doing those oh so special things they do like deleting emails they need, and finally your providing a web based platform for ALL of your users to check their email.

If this is only one person, I'll remomend to follow the procedure bellow. If not, enable OWA...
TO enable forward, go to Exchange Admin, go to file, create, new custom recipient. Name this one FOrward_USer_name. Now open the users properties for the mailbox (not custom recipient), go to Delivery Option and at the bottom you will find the Alternate Recipient-Deliver this message to. You can select the Custom recipietn just created. You also have the option forward only a copy to the custom recipient and leave a copy in the mailbox, if you want. This will do the trick.
You may also want to hide the Custom recipient from the Address Book (Opent he custom recipient, I think is the Advanced Tab, Hide from the address book, look carefuly).Regards,
Radu

See answer 3 & 4 This is the simplest method of forwarding mail without getting into having mailbox agents running. (The Outlook rules wizard only seems to run when you open the mailbox).
You have to create the custom recipient first, then set the delivery options, then hide the custom recipient from the address book (this only makes it invisible to users, not to the X400 routing
