Can anyone recommend a free Intrusion Detection Software? This could be for either Linux or Windows OS.

Snort

Snort is amazing, can run on your desktop or you can build a cheap "Snort Box" and set a tap (or hub) on your network so it intercepts all data (I recomend tap over hub).

It is a bit to learn but once you know it it's very powerfull. Plus it's free.

not very windows friendly though

by straightp In reply to Snort

i tried to get it to work on windows but there were so many pieces to put into place that something always failed not to mention the detection rules aren't windows compatible. Good stuff though if you get it to work.

It can be difficult to configure for Windows but once you get it running it's fantastic. Best bet is to build a cheap little Free BSD box, throw it on a tap and your good to go.
