So I've Been Bamboozled

by FreeTechie In reply to Free Techie - Not in the ...

Even if that's not the correct spelling it doesn't matter. It's show's
my frustration with my current job. IN that I think I've been scammed
for the past 4 years.<br />
<br />
Let me explain, I started out right out of high school in a tech
position at the local university. Fixing computers, their software and
hardware troubleshooting, printers, drivers, even a/v equipment. I
setup wireless and wired networks, network attached storage. All at a
striking 12.50hr @ 24hrs a week! That was great at the time back 4
years ago when I had no "real" experience in the field other then
helping my friends and family. The position slowly made it's way into a
full time position with a slight pay raise and more server
administration. Things I've never done but would love to try my hand
at. So reading and learning and more reading and learning I've become
the only one to know how to do what I know how to do at the department.<br />
<br />
Now the thing is that since the start of my position I've been what's
considered and hourly employee. That is I get paid for what I work, no
sick, no vacation paid time. Nothing, nada, zilch (is that a word?)!
And no benefits. Which highly sucks. Now being the nice guy I am I
asked about two years into the position. They said oh we'll get right
on it. 6 months of asking and waiting and nothing, zilch. Love that
word! Anyways, so I kinda just gave up. I figured I'd work hard for 4
years and try and find something else.<br />
<br />
I only have just realized how badly I've been treated by looking for
positions and being interviewed. A job I was interviewed for and
hopefully getting is benefitted, normal hours and starting pay is $19,
they just have to check my references to give me more. For me this is a
great opportunity and I hope I get it. What's great is they told me
that they had about 100 applicants and they narrowed it down via a word
search. I had just the right words in my resume. I am happy I drafted
and redrafted it.<br />
<br />
It's just now I feel so gipped. And it's getting harder to concentrate
and really try where I am now untill I know for sure if I am getting
the position. Sure this place treats me okay but the other position
treats me like a king compared to here. But even if I don't get the
position, I'll be looking for something else on full throttle.<br />
<br />
I just hope from what I am writing that others too will take a hard
look at their position with and open eye and think about what they have
and what they deserve.<br />

So I

by michael.clark In reply to So I've Been Bamboozled

<p>Aout 95-96 I started in IT after programing and building systems since I had been 12. the first company I hired on with said I was "very entry level", that was after 10 years of continuous daily study. They kept me at 12 dollars an hour. after 7 months and 2 programing certificates in web development /admin, I had to make more (wife and kids) so I applied for a second job, who went nuts trying to get me, flew me out ot the west coast. After about a year and my MCSE, they also said I was "Entry level", so I turned around and started applying again. today I make about 70K, I don't get the entry level thing anymore. </p>
<p>Basically I found that a given employer will tend to use you at the lowest rate they can get away with. The only raises I really ever got where when I moved to a new job. I tried hanging out for a year or two, because head hunters said they needed that to show stability, but the companies I worked for showed niether stability or appreciation for what I could do. I found it comical that I was always "entry level" when I asked for a raise. </p>
<p>Today's climate is that no one will last to retirment, and even fewer really give a squirt about your issues, you need to do that. Your experiance is typical, and this is not just the IT fields. Now after a few hops I found a company that understands that I am not entry level, and pays fairly, they also give me raises and benefits, and they dont take it personally if I ask, and they act on it, not just **** smoke. I appreciate your hanging around for a while to give people a chance, and it probabyl didn't hurt your resume, but you probabaly lost thousands in the process, and that ultimatly is what your working for, finacial stability. Good luck, </p>
<p> </p>

So I've Been Bamboozled

by HutchTech In reply to So I've Been Bamboozled

To move up, you're going to have to move on.  Sadly, that's the state of affairs in most IT departments.  You'd think that they might want a loyal employee that knows their systems to stick it out, but usually that's not the case.  Take your skills elsewhere--there really are jobs out there, especially for the specialist.  It's time you showed 'em what you're really made of.  Who knows, maybe once  your start looking, they'll want to keep you around.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the pep talk. I am a young guy, only 22, but
I am married and have mucho responsibility. Maybe it's just where I am
living but the market is fiesty and hard to get a new job in. Perhaps
it's just me, heh.<br />

During my recent job hunts, I've noticed that some jobs have less scope
of responsibility than my previous jobs, but they pay more.  I
don't ask why, but just take the job.

It

Yes, so, today is the day I am suppose to receive a call from the hospitol. Let's hope I get it!<br />
<br />
Also, general rant. Don't you hate it when you've made a wrong choice
in hosting? I know I did. Don't choose www.aplus.net if you want power
and ability on your site.<br />

Greasemonkey + Firefox + Script = Greasy Downloads

by FreeTechie In reply to Free Techie - Not in the ...

In case everyones been in the dark, a couple of hackers have
circumvented the newly enrolled "you must have a legit copy" Windows
Genuine Authentication. It envolves code from the Firefox extension
http://greasemonkey.mozdev.org/ and well Firefox.  Then download
the hackers script and voila, not problemo downloads. There in greasy
download's. An internet explorer add on has been made too.<br />
<br />
All in all it makes you realize that there probably is nothing that
Microsoft could do to stop people from using illegal copies of their OS.<br />

So I got it

<p>OK, just stay humble on the job for a while until you know the politics of the place.  You said it's a hospital?  Be sure to bow and scrape whenever you're around an MD, or you'll be outa there.</p>
