    freezes at BIOS screen

    Locked

    by library.girl ·

I’m currently using Windows 98SE, and recently tried upgrading my Norton’s Antivirus, and install a Spybot program. The computer was restarted several times over the course of a few hours.

The last time it was restarted, it went to the black screen with the BIOS seetings/information and just freezes. Multiple short beeps.

Windows does not load. It does not start in Safe mode. I tried to reintall Windows 98SE, I put the disk in the CD-drive but nothing happens.

What’s wrong, and how can I get it to start in safe mode, or reload windows…?

What type and version BIOS? How many and what type of beeps (ex: one long and three short beeps)?

Multiple short beeps on POST are usually an indication of RAM or video problems.

If the machine had been experiencing slow performance prior to this, I would try new RAM first.

Perhaps even re-seating the RAM and video card will correct the problem.

The beeps indicate that a memory failure has
halted the system. This usually means the first
memory block, as the BIOS can’t complete loading
Also the video memory and video BIOS should be
the first thing you see. Reseat the video card,
and the memory DIMMS. If still no boot, count
the beeps long or short. That can be decoded
but usually is all memory related.

This an be caused by having different memory modules installed. Make sure both RAM sticks are same
