Freezing after win 98 Splash screen

I had something similar happen to me twice. The first time it was the network components, which wiping them out and reisntalling them as well as reseating the NIC solved. The second time was a Kennsington Scroll Ring Trackball. It would not go pastthe splash screen if I tried to use it as PS/2 mouse, it only worked with USB.

For what it is worth...

Boot up in safe mode (f8 key), then open the device manager tab on the System Properties Window, be sure that the "View Devices By Type" radio button is selected. Look for conflicts (usually highlighted with a yellow or red mark) and/or Duplicate entries. Disable/delete duplicate entries, and check resource usage on any other conflicting devices (a big culprit is switching to a USB mouse and it still wants to keep your PS/2 port alive).
Also bump Video hardware accelleration down from full, just to see if that helps (found on Performance tab after clicking ADVANCED button on the SETTINGS tab of the Display Properties Screen).

Thanks anyway but I am sure it is network card related.

How old is the system, how big is the hard drive... is it nearly full!!!

It may be a simple matter of not having enough cache memory. Check it out and if so try removing some unnecessary stuff..

Thats all

Freezing after win 98 Splash screen

I had this problem on one at work. I finally had to use F8 to get the Windows choice screen. Then I went to "step-by-step" and watched. It seemed to hang in the same area each time. I finally checked out the autoexec.bat in the area where it hung. McAfee virus put a line in there that said "if error - halt" and it sure did. The little blue line went on and on, but never went into Windows. I put a mem in front of that line in the autoexec and it worked fine. I just gave up on McAfee constantly scanning for that machine. May be other ways around it, but you might check and see. It's an easy way to find out WHERE the problem is anyway.
