Fried Hard Drive Controller

By esummers ·
I have a 13Gb Quantum Fireball hard drive that fried one of the chips on the controller card. I noticed that I can easily remove the controller card.I need some advice as to where to get a replacement--- or even a compatable--- card so I can retrieve some data that I DIDN'T back up.

You can go to Office Depot. They have just about everything for your computer needs. You can also try your luck at Staples. However, you can't retrieve any data that wasn't backed up. You lost it. Whatever data you had that wasn't backed is now goneand you have to reinsert it.

Sorry, should have been more clear-- I'm fairly sure that the data on the drive itself is OK. I just need a replacement controller to reinstall on the same drive to hopefully get at my data.

Actaully one of the tricks to data recovery is by swapping the controller card built into the hard disk drive. You need to find a similar controller card for this drive in order to be able to possibly recover anything from the drive though.

Go to maxtor and search for support on the specific quantum drive you have (Maxtor purchased Quantum hdd branch).

Thanks, but I already knew that part.

To clarify-- any source for a replacement controller card for the HD? I'm mainly concerned about not being able to find one that is compatable with a drive that is a few years old-- or would, say, a controller for a 20 or 40Gb Quantum Fireball work to get my HD back up?

If you are referring to the circuit card that is on the drive itself, then your only choice is to find the EXACT same model drive, and swap the controller cards.

If you are referring to a plug in IDE or SCSI interface card in your PC, any card with for the appropriate drive interface (IDE SCSI) and the correct slot interface for your motherboard (ISA, PCI)
The newer cards should be backwards compatable.

I have seen PCI slot IDE cards for under $30 at various web-tailers.
For the best compatability with your older drive, purchase an ATA100 card for IDE.
If SCSI, purchase a card that specifically supports the SCSI specification for your drive.

Promise technologies has what you need Ultra100 TX or Ultra133 TX, just click on the site map & choose ATA controler. There available at your better PC suppliers, some big box stores might carry them, usually $30 to $50US
