Front Page Ext. Hit Counter won't work..

By dlanors ·
I have IIS 5.0 on a Win2K server with FP Extensions ver 4.x. I created a hit counter using FP 2002, (inserted code calling fpcount.exe into web page). I can't get the counter to work, or even display. (it shows the red x with the alt text). Does anyone have the syntax of the exact code that should be inserted, and a list of necessary support files and where they need to be on the web site? It looks like something is either missing, or in the wrong place. I have the web site set to allow scriptsand executables, but any other requirements I may be missing would be helpful...
Thank you...

Front Page Ext. Hit Counter won't work..

by Michael34 In reply to Front Page Ext. Hit Count ...

Hmm.... Thats a good one. I know I was kind of having the same issue. What happended with mine is it would not even show my hit counter. I fixed it by deleting my old hit counter and foing to "Insert > Component > Hit counter" I set it to a fixed amount of digits save it and it workes fine now.

I am not sure if it is an issue or what, but for some reason FP seams to not like to make hit counters that work.

The Code I used is at the bottom before </HTML> tag and it is:

<body>
<!--webbot bot="HitCounter" b-reset="FALSE" u-custom i-image="4" i-resetvalue="0" PREVIEW="<strong>[Hit Counter]</strong>" i-digits="5" --></p>
</body>
</html>

I know FP stores the Counter file in your _Private folder as a *.Txt file (Mineis index.html.cnt), but I am really not to sure where it stores the Image for the counter at.

What is your Web Page?

Hope it helps
Michael

Thanks for the input on this. I see the 'alt' text, (hit counter), and the graphic with the red x. In my html code, which looks much like yours, there is some additional text that seems to be pointing to the location of the page itself..."?page=c:\path\default.htm...etc. " do you have anything like this in your html code???

Front Page Ext. Hit Counter won't work..

Did you create the page on your local PC and then publish it to the web?

If so, What you want to do is this:
Open up the page with the hit counter in your browser.

Click on the FP Icon at the top of your browser (I use IE, so its there).

It will then Ask for your User Name and password. Enter that, and then go into the page and in "Normal Mode" delete the hit counter. Then re add it.
What this does, is directly edit the page on the server. Once your new counter is on, Just save the page and preview the page.
What happends is if you created it on your PC, sometimes FP won't publish correctly, and it will have the hit counter pointing to your Hard Drive (C:\My Webs\My Pages) which would explain why it won't load the picture. If you recreate it on the web server, it will then repoint the information and load the hit counter correctly.

If you are trying to preview it on your Hard Drive before you publish it, the hit counter won't work, as it has to be on a server with FP Extentions.

FP Stores the Results in a TXT File in the _Private folder
FP Stores the Image File in the _vti_bin/fpcount.exe/Page=Hit_Test.htm|Image=1|Digits=5

To access that folder, you will need a FTP Client which may also cause FP Extentions to not work correctly.

Good Luck

Front Page Ext. Hit Counter won't work..

Also I created a page that has all the FP Hit counter on it and how the Code is supposed to look for testing.

The page is:
http://www.bakpc.com/Hit_Test.htm
Feel free to view the Source Code, as all the hit counters work. I just threw the page togather so you can see what it should look like.

Good Luck

Thank you very much for all your help. You answered all my questions, and I really appreciate the page you put up with the counters. I still can't make mine work, though. I also am having issues using the "publish" method of uploading the site. I usually ftp it. This may be the problem. I have the site (and associated folders) pw protected, and whenever I try to publish, it does not allow me in...doesn't even ask for the password. Anyway, I'll keep on trying...Thanks again.
