Where would I need to begin, to figure out why my mouse constantly freezes? OS is Windows98.

The mouse drivers.

What kind of mouse is it? USB, PS2? Is it a special mouse, like with a roll wheel, or a standard mouse? Is it wireless?

If your mouse is any kind that isn't the standard, two-button, no-frills mouse, make sure you have the drivers for it. Should have come with the mouse.
Check your hardware profile in the control panel and tell it to search for drivers. Make sure it has the right one. Check the manufacturer for the mouse to find out which one is appropriate.

Start by making sure that the ball, rollers, and encoder wheels are clean.

If this is a PS/2 mouse, has it ever been un-plugged with the PC on?
If so, try a new mouse.
If the problem persists with a new mouse, your PS/2 port is damaged.

Switch to a serial or USB mouse.

If this is a USB mouse, try installing a powered USB hub.

thermostat? could be to cold.......seriously though TheChas and answer #1 have it. It's usually either mouse drivers or in the case of a serial mouse dust and lint build up on the rollers and ball. Optical mouses are now like $15.00 and are far superior to old rollerball mice [no ball and rollers to collect dust] and work off the USB port so it's just plug in and go. If you have the old rollerball mouse, dump it and get an optical mouse......

Have you tried ACME Inc's new "Heated MousePad"?

Here are a few ideas:

If this is a serial mouse, check for conflicts with another serial device (modem, etc). COM1 & 3 and Com 2 & 4 utilize the same IRQ and cause conflicts.

Check to make sure the hardware is okay (swap with a known good mouse and see if the problem persists).

Remove the device and let it be redetected. Install the latest drivers.

Make sure it's really the mouse that's locking up (not the whole system). Try running keyboard commands when the mouse locks to verify this.

Try using a different type of mouse (USB or Serial).

Invest in the new Acme Inc "heated mousepad" or, for those on a budget, the inexpensive and energy efficient "mouse mitten".
Good luck...hope this helps (and if not, that it at least gave you a smile).

Hi

Do you have a digitizer attachtched to your computer? If the digitizer is switched on and the puck is on the tablet, it can effect the behaviour of your mouse. I had a similar problem, and switching off the digitizer solved it.

Good luck
