ftp access through proxy

Hi

Just wondering if I can access ftp via a secure network that goes through a proxy server..

I have the proxy host, username and password and port number but when I enter these details into a ftp client (like ws_ftp) it tries to connect but says that connection attempt failed.

ftp works fine via internet explorer but was wondering how to work in an ftp client
