FTP error event taking down server

By ngunity ·
I have an FTP server that has been on and off having the following error in event viewer:

"Unable to collect the FTP performance statistics. The error code returned by the service is data DWORD 0." Event ID ~ 1000, source: FTPCTRS

Whenever this error occurs the server loses all network connectivity thus knocking my server off the internet and 'causing downtime that is killing one of my projects. The info on and technet does not give me any useful info. I am not to my best knowledge using the performance counters mentioned, can anyone advise how to find them and turn them off?

More importantly can anyone who has successfully run FTP server on a win 2k box, iis 5, sp2. Advise how I can resolve this problem?

Check to make sure that you are not running an Alert in Performace Logs and Alerts. Maybe there is a setting to poll the FTP performance monitor counters that is causing the error (like in Technet article Q20163.
So click Start -> Run. Type in MMC and click Ok.
Click File -> Add Snap-in.
Click the Add button, scroll down and select Performance Logs & Alerts. Click Ok. Click OK again on the other window.
Performance Logs & Alerts opens up. Expand all 3 options and make sure nothings is running that is polling FTP. If there is one, delete it.

hope this helps

I checked for all performance monitoring on the FTP server as you suggested. Unfortunately there are no monitors running at all, thus the event ID explanation doesn't make a whole lot of sense in my servers case. To make matters worse it's an intermittent problem with no set thing which I can guarantee will cause the problem
