FTP through Proxy (simple question)

By Tmiller3 ·
I believe (with my limited knowledge) that my Proxy Server is set up to allow communication via FTP through Port 21. I am having a problem with a certain program that uses that though. How can I check to confirm from a W98 workstation that I am able to send out VIA FTP?

Thanks

Not sure about checking Port 21, but ...

Kick off a DOS session and FTP, OPEN hostaddress, enter account and password.

If that works you should be able to do same/similar from your program. If it doesn't work then FTP is not available from your W98 system.

Assumes hostaddress, account and password are all valid. May be a Windows FTP that comes with W98 (don't use W98 much so not sure).

In I.E., try:
ftp://ftp_server_name

e.g. ftp://123.com

If the FTP is O.K., you may be asked for the user name and password!

Although you don't say which Proxy software/hardware solution you are using, some proxy servers require a client component to be installed for 3rd party apps (such as FTP) to work, whilst browsers will still function normally if their settings for the proxy server are defined in the connection tab of Internet Options.

Make sure you have installed any client app needed to use the proxy correctly. Typical examples of software which requires this are MS Proxy & MS ISA Server. If yours is one ofthese, there is usually a share created on the proxy server called MSPCLNT which contains a setup program to be run on each client PC.

A good way to check if this is the case is to attempt an FTP session from your browser (i.e. type the URL 'ftp://ftp.microsoft.com'), if this works and your FTP software doesn't then there is probably a missing client component for your Proxy.
