FTP works, but not WWW

by yechenglin . Updated 19 years ago

A Gateway 5100 desktop. Road Runner Cable modem connected to PC directly using ethernet cable. The onboard NIC is dead(when owner replace the power supply, something went wrong?). Installed Netgear FA311 NIC.
1. PC acquire IP address intermittenly, ping www.yahoo.com works. Dropped connection, no internet connection(www or ftp or instant messenger). Cable replaced and tested OK with another PC(internet works). Still no WWW connection, but IP address acquired/renewed easily, can ping www.yahoo.com.
2. Move the Gateway PC to another home, connect to router to DSL connection. Internet works(both www, ftp), but download speed is very slow(under 10kb/s). Found 140 virus/240trojan horse/adware/spyware. Removed using AdAware, Norton antivirus. Still not working. Run system file checker, DLLregister, etc., not working.
3. Brough back home. Restored using Gateway Operating System CD(Windwos XP Media Edition, SP2 integrated). No www connectitive. FTP works just fine, IPCONFIG shows DNS server and IP address. Ping www.yahoo.com works. Connected to RoadRunner cable modem. Cable and Modem are known to be good by connecting to another computer.

Anything else to try?
