Future Tape Backup Technologies

By mike.cunningham ·
Which direction is tape backup headed, from a hardware perspective ?

Is LTO the next widely used standard, or AIT, or something else ?

I need a faster, higher capacity, more reliable system than our DLT 20/40 autoloaders.

TIA.

Future Tape Backup Technologies

by GilesGuthrie In reply to Future Tape Backup Techno ...

LTO is certainly the technology that the vendors are pushing at the moment, and it does seem good, offering high capacity per tape, and quick drives. However, if speed of backup is not a priority, then SuperDLT is probably a better option, as the drives and cartridges are cheaper, and the capacity is the same. Also, sDLT drives will be backwards-compatible with your legacy tapes.
