Excel and Word 98 installed on G3 Macos 8.6 Word works correctly. When Excel is opened the system freezes and has to be restarted. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Upgraded to Macos 10 also but still freezes up.
User has PageMaker, Photoshop, Free Hand and FileMaker Pro. these all worked correctly.

Microsoft products are big memory hogs
so first be mindful of how many programs
you have open vs. how much RAM you
have. You can monitor this by clicking on
the desktop or selecting Finder at the
application menu and then going to your
apple menu About this computer. If you
dont have a lot of RAM you should
allocate some virtual memory, if you can
      spare the Hard Drive space.

Try to adjust the amount of RAM allocated
to Excel. Locate Excel on your hard drive
select it go to File menu Get Info memory
and adjust the amount of Memory.

First of all, make sure you are not starting Excel across a network–either opening a document on a server, or opening a copy of the application that’s on a server. This can occasionally cause problems. Actually, Word is the biggest culprit for this, but you never know.

Second, look in the Preferences folder inside the System Folder and trash any Excel files. Look for names that start with “Excel”, “Microsoft” or “MS”. You might also want to trash pref files that have “ODBC” or “VBA” in their names. Excel will recreate these prefs when it starts again.

If trashing the prefs doesn’t work, you’ll need to take the more drastic approach of looing in your Extensions folder and moving any Microsoft extensions into your “Extensions (Disabled)” folder. (Caution!!! You can really mess up your system if you aren’t careful doing this. Don’t blame me if anything goes wrong.) You can try Extensions Manager, but some files in the Extensions folder don’t show up in Extensions Manager, so doingit manually is best. Move all the Microsoft, MS, VBA, and ODBC files out of the extensions folder (don’t throw them away–you might need them again) and then start Excel. You should also start Word, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer, Outlook and any other MS applications. The Office and internet apps will rebuild any files they need in the Extensions folder.

      Hope this helps!
