Game and Software Programing Help Please

Ok, Im interested in becoming a game or software programer. Can anyone from either profession explain to me what programing langues you need to know, what other information you need to know and what a good major is, stuff like that. I was thinking of doing something inbetween so i had options but im not sure if its possible.
