Game Engines and Programming Languages

By gec.boss ·
I am begining programmer. I know HTML, PerlScript, and Visual Basic 5.
If I were to create a realistic driving simulator, what game engine or programming language(s) would be the best to use? If posiible, incorporating one of the languages above.
Links to free downloads and such will be gratefully accepted. Thank You!

As you come from a VB line, first learn DirectX programming in VB and VB.NET. That is the best start. Also go to msdn online at msdn.microsoft.com and find VB/game/directX. You dont need anything more.
Good luck

Thank you for the response. I have already thought of using DirectX 9 w/VB.NET. As I don't have much time to learn this, I was wondering if there were any other choices. Sorry I forgot to mention that in my question! I am adding a comment right now to inform others. Thanks again!

If you want to try a multiplatorm approach then opengl.org has a lot of resources for developing software.

Thanks, but I'm not really interested in the multi-platform approach. I would like to stick with Windows for now. In the future I may use the link though. Thank you for your effort.

If VB and DirectX is too complex, you could try Blitz Basic or Dark Basic:

Thank you for the response. These engines are really what I was looking for but because of my age (11) I really can't afford these products.

Please do not point me to the DirectX Web site. I forgot to mention that I really don't have the time to learn VB.NET and DirectX 9. The purpose of posting this question was to find a quicker and cheaper way. Sorry for the inconvenience.
