Game networking

By dannylucky ·
I'm not very good in the networking field but it does interest me. My problem goes as follows: I use Windows 98 and I'm trying to establish a dial-up connection with a friend (Win Me) (which does not have the internet). Would it be possible to establish a connection with him to do game playing w/o the internet and if so how? I would appreciate your help thank you

yes,
if you tell me which game I can try to help you.
It will require patience and lot of trial and errors , both from you and your friend.
There could be modem compatibillity problems, etc

Depends on the game, but for example something like Starcraft there is a few options for playing against other players. If the game supports it just connect via modem, one of you will be waiting for a call the other will make the call, I beleive usually the caller is in control for the first while, therefore that person selects the game, maps, etc.

If I knew which game you where playing I could tell you exactly how to go about it.

Good Luck

Bottom line is as the others have stated. You both need modems. Both players will go into the multiplayer version of their game. The caller will then choose modem, and will be prompted for a phone number. The phone will ring on the other end (if he has more than one phone attached to same number) but he should not answer it. His computer will, at that point a connection is established and the caller can then proceed to create a game and the other can then opt to join that game.
Each games setup will be different however. I am going by how a starcraft game is setup but the same principles apply.
Good luck!

Mike

It looks like you can not play this via modem, without the games ability to utilize dial-direct (via modem) it is not possible. BUT if you'd like to connect each system using NIC cards and Cable, you'd be just fine playing the LAN. Of Course, THAT might not be possible without having both systems at the same location. Sorry
