Garbage box on NT logon

By jim.sessa ·
Whenever I hit control, alt, delete to log onto this NT Server v4.0, a box comes up with garbage in the title bar and an OK button. I click OK and then the logon box appears. The server seems to work fine otherwise. Has anyone ever seen this before?

Thanks for you help.

Jim

You can edit NT registry to create pop up messages when somebody hits C_A_D combo keys - I did it sometime back and I can't remember how I did it. So you need to reverse this in the registry - need to search registry guru websites.

Check at www.jsiinc.com and search NT Reg Hacks for "logon message".

You can fix the garbage, change the message or eliminate it entirely.

That is called the 'logon banner' it can be setup through policy editor. Open the computer policy and go to Windows NT System, then Logon, you will see Logon Banner. That is where you set that up!!

I had a set of video drivers that did the same thing, once. Try getting the latest video driver update. (I ended up turning the resolution to 800x600, which fixed it for me on those drivers.)

Good luck!

It sounds just like a LOGON Banner that is displayed. If you have the system policies implimented, meaning that if there are policies that are in place for your users, you need to use the POLEDIT.EXE found in the winnt\system32 directory. After opening the program choose File -> Open and browse to your PDC (winnt\system32\repl\import\scripts ) directory. Inside look for the NTconfig.pol, this will be the only Policy that this program \can read, there might be a config.pol also in there but that is for 95/98 systems. Once you have opened this open the Default Computer Icon and then Proceed as follows: WINDOWS NT SYSTEM -> LOGON -> LOGON BANNER, if the box is grayed, click once to write your own logon banner, click again to make it so that the logon banner is blanked out each time a default NT machine logs onto the network, or Gray the check box out to have the policy ignor this option. Now if there is no policy running, and no NTconfig and all of that, here is the NT Reg Hack to change this yourself.
