I used to do phone support for gateway,
and in my opinion the pc itself is not that bad. the support on the other hand is all outsourced to call centers whose goal is to take more calls (get you off the phone as quickly as possible). The pc's come from the box with low system resources (many programs running in the system tray) and with the modems they come equipped with being very system resource dependant, it spells trouble when trying to connect to an isp such as Aol.
No one will ownup to this (gateway blames Aol and vice versa) could be frustrating, But if you are an expeirenced user and can take items out of sys tray (MSCONFIG) Then they are as good as the next off the shelf system, With tons of preloaded
software and neat things (Gateway goback) to restore an angry system to last known good.
I personally would not recommend a gateway for a novice user, (even though that is who they target) for the earlier mentioned support issues.

Hope this helps you decide.

I've owned a Gateway for almost a year now and I pleased with it. However you gotta watch it when you're ordering though. I got mine at a Gateway Country store and ended paying for some software that I didn't need or really wanted all because the salesperson chose not to be specific about what I was getting. This is because the salespeople at GC are working for commissions. I would recommend ordering over the phone or internet and getting only what you NEED.
They are good computers though I've had no trouble. Customer Service is good too. However when I get my next computer I'll most likely buy from DELL or build my own. I like the way DELL makes their computers, they're just nicer plus they come standard with good top name hardware. They're a bit more expensive though. If you're budget minded and want good support go with Gateway. If you wanna spend much more go with DELL. Either way you will get a good computer and the support you'll need.

Outside of work, I support a lot of home PC users, some of whom have Gateway PCs. All of them have had problems within the first year, and all have given up on Gateway support. That's nice for my checkbook balance, but I feel badly for my clients - they deserve better from the vendor.

For years I've used Microns at work, and I'm happy to report that the standard I established has worked out well, but we've recently added a few Dell machines to the system. These have proven to be well made, and very reliable, with the added bonus of being much cheaper than Microns. I probably will change our standard to Dell this year as a result of this experience, and because Micron has decided to get out of the PC business. Gateway will never be a contender in my company, unless I see a major change in their quality control and support processes.

I concur with rawright. I do a good bit of work for end users who have dealt with gateway and decided just to pay someone and get it over with. I had one customer who was sent a new hard drive and given a phone number for support during the self install. Talk about savings, get the customer to do the work. He was, unfortunately, legally blind, which posed a small problem. Were I you, I would check out nutrend.com for good prices, and alienware.com for super high performance.

I used to repair GW2K PC's as part of ICL UK's OEM PC Repair program.
Technically their PC's are fine, and when the parts are available to the engineer they supply ALL possible parts to resolve the problem within at least the 2nd vist.
But I would certainly concure with the other comments as there are definate issue with their support lines.
I have recently setup my own company and had to try to source a repair for one of their notebooks just out of warranty by one month, and trying to source the part was a nightmare! Dont buy their notebooks or if so have extended warranty, unless you want to pay through the nose for a GW2K repair
