I asked the question of what was a gcc.exe. and what does it do? Where is it supposed to be? How to you find it? How do you replace it? Windows 98SE says it can’t find it, and it needs it to open up some files. I found the icon by. Right click on desktop.go properties> go web folder options yes file types theres where I found the gcc. file. tried to open it up. Windows said it was missing. I went to start>programs>window explorer> double clicked on downloads open a window with a list of programs to open up files. Icon of a small window with gcc beside it was listed there I clicked on it. Windows said cannot find the gcc.exe. file. Or one of it libaries. HOW DO I REINSTALL IT? Where do I get one to reinstall? THANK-YOU VERY MUCH for your HELP!!!

This sounds suspiciously like a virus or Trojan. And it’s the second time I’ve seen this question asked within the last week. I don’t know of any Windows file named gcc.exe. I checked Symantec and McAfee, though, and they had no info on it. Maybeit’s new. Perhaps you could go to either of their virus information sites and email them with your problem.

Looking back, I see you also posted the first question I saw on this subject, so maybe it’s not an epidemic. But I still suspect virus. And I didn’t sugest the obvious-run a virus scan. But if it’s new, the scan won’t find it.

I don’t think it is a virus because my scan for viruses showd none. I think it is something used to open up files I downloaded. I will try what the other two answered. Thank-you for your help though.

gcc.exe is the windows version of the “Gnu C Compiler”. This is the standard C Compiler for Linux and other Unixes. I’ve never seen another executable called gcc, so unless you installed that package some time in the past, I can’t help.

      Greetings,

I suspect that you’re referring to:

      i386-elf-gcc.exe

      If you follow the downloading/installation
      instructions at:

      http://sourceware.cygnus.com/ecos/

      you should end up at

      http://sourceware.cygnus.com/ecos/tools/win-i386-elf.html

and get the file anf instructions you need.

      Maxwell
