it's in there somewhere. anything in the event log? while mulling this over you are doing Windows updates, yes?
i take it this does not occur when you shutdown from Safe Mode. what about using HiJack This as tool to help you find it. get from www.downloads.com or www.tucows.com
have you tried changing permissions on all registry keys to make sure you can see them all...do you have reason to suspect privious infestation that now has left this behind?

Turns out it was a bum install of McAfee suite.

I searched on GDWH and found references to "some program" by Dell, also reference to Adobe Acrobat but nothing specific. Doing a search of the registery I do find GDWH listed with a registery key, but don't want to delete it as I don't know what it is.

Well it must be something related to that computer as there is no reference to any error messages like that in the MS Knowledge Base. You can however try these web sites as a possible answer as they are the only things that MS list as Shut Down Errors.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;313290

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;311279

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307274

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;831431

But that file is something unique to your computer as it doesn't exist on this one in any form.

I would hazard a guess that it is something to do with Dell as I certainly have all the software that you would likely to ever use and then more installed on this unit.

Perhaps you could try System Mechanic to scan the registry and computer you can download a 30 day trial copy from

http://www.iolo.com/downloads.cfm

But just a word of warning only download the System Mechanic 5 and not the Pro version as it has a AV product in it which may cause problems and really for only a test it isn't worth the download time. You will have a fully functioning Utility when installed but just a word of warning "DO NOT" chose to remove Duplicate Files.

Turned out to be the McAfee suite installed on the computer. None of the suite programs will run and can't uninstall it.

I'll give reg mechanic a try. Will probably also have to do a selective startup to eliminate the program, although this is a pain with the number of programs set to start. Will post back.

Turns out the error was caused by McAfee. After doing some trouble shooting with the answers here I discovered that using MSCONFIG to stop ALL McAfee programs from starting I got the internet back and the GDWH error disappeared. However, I can't uninstall McAfee from the "Add/Remove" programs and there is no uninstaller with the McAfee suite. Go figure.
