  There are many reasons for general protection faults and the solution varies from operating system to operating system. Microsoft has an excellent article, Q82710 that describes the causes of general protection faults and offers various troubleshooting tips. This article deals mainly with the Windows 95 and 98 operating systems. You do not indicate in your question which operating system you are using. Hope this helps.
