i need a generic driver that will let win 2000 reconize and use a lexmark 2050 printer. the manufacturer says that it is not compatible to win2000. the system will reconize it but not the driver.

Try http://www.driverguide.com and search for Lexmark 2050 for lxinst32.exe for All Windows versions.

Is this printer listed on the W2K Hardware Compatibility List?

If so, there should be a "generic" driver built into Windows.
Instead of using the manufactures disk, manually select your printer from the list.

Generally speaking, I have found that if the manufacture does not offer a driver for a version of Windows, you are much better off replacing hardware than trying to make it work.
