Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Problem

Over the past week, my son’s laptop (running WinXP Home Ed.) has been running like a slug and when he attempts to open IE6 (or his apps), the following error message often appears:

“Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close”

He’s been keeping his AV and AS signatures up-to-date, so I don’t think his system is infected… He has tried to run his V-com Fix-It Utilities, but it also reports the same problem!

I’ve checked MS’ KB on the subject and also did some ‘Googling’ as well – but to no avail. Frankly, I’m stumped and would appreciate any assistance in diagnosing and fixing the problem.
