Get and set Exif attributes

I am hoping to write a VBA funtion in Excel to get and set Exif attributes for a list of Files. What API system calls will I need? It is being used in my own application to create a photo album which iwant to include shooting date but lately my camera has been resetting itself so the shooting date is not set on some of my photos.
