Get rid of Blank buttons on the Taskbar

    Locked

    by aclark ·

When our Win98 workstations come out of screensaver, a blank button stays on the taskbar until you click on the button and it disappears. Not a big deal, until some of our users have 40-50 blank buttons. Then some of the running apps are buried halfa monitor screen length down. It is quite confusing to the users, they can’t find their running programs or they end up launching the same app multible times. I have seen this with NT Workstation also. Thanks for a solution.

The Microsoft Knowledge Base doesn’t address this issue.

It’s been posted here several times before. Most of us agree that it’s a bug that won’t go away, and not all that pesky a one.

If you’ve got users with 40-50 blank buttons, I can see your problem, though. Seems like your best shot is educating users to kill those buttons on sight.

I did search another tech support board I frequent, and most there agree it’s a bug too. I did find one answer that questioner accepted as solvingthe problem. I haven’t tested it, but I present it in it’s entirety for you:

“Is this happening with the Screensaver?.If so Uninstall them and Install them back.
this happens with MS-DOS WINDOWS usually batch files.
      restore this file COMMDLG.DLL, COMDLG32.DLL,COMCTRL.DLL, COMCTL32.DLL,CTL3D.DLL,CTL3D32.DLL,CTL3DNT.DLL,CTL3DV2.DLL.

For restoring this files go to Start, Run, type SFC (system file checker) then choose extract file from disk system. then, It will prompt you with the path where WIN98 Cab files are. Then Make sure to Save this files 1 by one in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.
after that.Reboot the system. you might need to reboot several times I can believe. do so and get back to the screen and keep restoring those files.”
