Getting Experience in IT Security

By aw0l12 ·
Bear with me here guys as this has probably been done to death, have searched other posts and have not found the answer I am looking for. I am starting my degree in Information security which part the of the degree I will be receiving certain certifications among which are CCNA, CCNA Security, Network+, and Security+. Now I know certifications don't really mean anything without the experience to back it up, here is where I am in a pickle, most entry level jobs want experience, but you have to get the job to get the experience first so it's kind of a catch 22, which I don't mind as I know that is how the IT industry is. What I am trying to find out is how to get the experience, is there something that I can do from my home as getting an internship is not possible as I need a steady job, and help desk jobs do not seem to be willing to take a chance on someone. My question is if there is some sort of experience that I can gather at my home and do offsite stuff and just tweak around? Any help would be appreciated. P.S. I am learning linux as I do know that all the back end big hardware is basically ran off linux.
