Question

Getting files back from an external hard drive

By jokearney ·
Tags: Mac, Hardware
I have mistakenly formatted my external hard drive from Mac OS Extended to e-fat. So I lost all the data that was on the Mac OS Extended. I was thinking I was using a different external drive. When I was in e-fat mode i downloaded a load of files onto it. I've since deleted the e-fat files and gone back to Mac OS Extended. The question is is there any way to get the original files back that were on the Mac OS Extended?

Try Time Machine Backup

Hey jokearney,

If you have Time Machine Backup, then recovery is possible by the Time Machine. (link removed by moderator)

I am afraid; if you don’t have any backup, then you need to try a data recovery app.
I would recommend you to go for the Test Disk (free version but lacks GUI and features), Stellar Data Recovery Professional for Mac (one of the best-paid choices).

Getting files back from an external hard drive

by KassiaXY In reply to Try Time Machine Backup

To recover files from an external hard drive, you can follow the steps below:
1. Dowanload and install a data recovery software. Here I recommend the free software Bitwar Data Recovery.
2. Select a csan mode and file types. This tool offers a deep scan, if you cannot recover your files, you can try this mode.
3, Preview and recover your files.
Hope it can help you.

To get your files back from external hard disk, you need to follow the steps given below:
- first of all, you need to choose the external hard disk, because you are going to recover data from the external hard drive, run Ease US data recovery wizard and under the external devices tab, choose the exact device when you lost data.
- after that in the second step scan for the lost data
- and finally, preview and recover data.
