Getting into the Setup on a computer

By wmhill ·
I am trying to add a scanner to a computer for a friend of mine. During the boot sequence, it says to press the Delete key to enter Setup. But when you do this, the computer locks up. I need to change to printer port settings to EPP. Any ideas on how I can get into the setup to do this??

Please describe what happens when the PC "locks up".

My first step would be to check and / or replace the CMOS back-up battery.
When these get weak, strange things can happen.

I have a system right now that locks up with a blue line at the bottom of the screen and a single cursor at the top when i enter BIOS setup.
On this system, the video card and motherboard do not get along well.
BIOS setup works fine with a different video card installed.

If it is locking up at the BIOS Setup entry point it is best to:

1. Disconnect all but the boot drive and floppy drive.

2. Replace the CMOS battery.

3. 'Clear' the BIOS data, most do this by shorting across the CMOS battery points or a jumper setting; check with board manuf web site.

4. Enter new BIOS setup config from scratch.

5. Reconnect the other drives and peripherals.

6. Update BIOS if possible.

BIOS entry lock up is usually due to battery failure, imminent battery failure, unknown password, of corrupt BIOS entry data. The instructions above will correct 95% of likely problems.

The computer is s SysteMax (I believe) that was originally sold on QVC. I know, I know! But I didn't buy it, I am only trying to add the scanner for a friend.
