Getting my feet wet.

By juwondread ·
I am a senior at Alcorn State University and I will be graduating in May,08. I will obtain a bachelor of science with a concertration in Computer Networking. I have completed the cisco academy course and I am about to take my CCNA. My question is what can I do from this point in order to gain an good entry level position to gain enough experience to specialize in security?

You have a degree and you will have a certification. That will get you through the door for most interviews. Make sure it isn't just paper. Spend some money and get some equipment. Make sure you REALLY know it. If you walk into an interview but can't answer simple questions because they aren't phrased the way they are in the book or can't apply the book knowledge to a real world situation, you're in trouble.

Find posts on a site like this and answer the questions. Do the research, test out options, and then post them. I have learned a ton from helping others.

And look for a friend in thie business. Join a local professional group and make a friend or two. Sometiems good jobs are more about who than what you know.

I have been doing just that so it seems that I am on the right track. I have repairing and upgrading computers for the past 4 years and I was able to obtain a ciso 2600 series and a cisco 1700 series. I am in the process of getting some switches so I can run a full scale network at home. I really appreciate you reply so stay in contact. I have a lot of great information and helpfuls things as far as IT goes. Thankyou
