getting rid of the desktop

By richardsower ·
I need to stop the desktop of windows explorer from running on start up so that internet explorer is the only thing that loads and is clickable. Can this be done in local/group policy or does it need to be done in the registry?

The only way I can think of is have a startup link to be

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -k
This will make it into full screen mode...

i don't know how to turn a windows pc into a web appliance.
surely there is a way...isn't that what microsoft wants anyhow?
have you downloaded the free internet explorer administration kit? from downloads.microsoft.com?
i would look in their for how to do this if this were my problem to solve.
also i would email microsoft for help on this. which will take a while so get it going
this would also be a fun one to call for microsoft tech support and see if i could beginner my way thru to some free advice. you never know when an engineer will be on the phones and bet they would love this one.

Hi,

if I understand correctly, you have Windows explorer opening on start up and you don't want it to open, but you do want IE to start up.

Change the entries under (for xp pro)
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

so that only the items you want to automatically open and start are in the folder, and remove the others

let us know how you get on,

cheers
