Ghost and external USB HD

I have a Compaq M700 Laptop and want to Ghost its hard drive to an externallyconnected USB hard drive. I am using Ghost 7, booting from a boot disk. Unfortunately, I have been unable to get Ghost to recognize the external drive. Anybody got any ideas?
