Ghosting laptop hdd’s

We have a laptop that had the hd crash, we are replcing it and need to get the old hd files into the new one. We don’t have another laptop to use. In using the 2 1/2 – 3 1/2 hd adapters what are the steps to follow to have a successful download? Any tips on do’s and dont’s needed.
