I’m new to this, so please excuse my ignorance. I’m basically just looking for some clarification.
We currently have a leased 10 megabit FDDI ring that is connecting multiple buildings. Within each building, we have gigabit capable switches with all of the proper cabling for gigabit installed (cat5e/cat6) as well as the proper NICs.
My question is does the 10 megabit/second FDDI ring that connects the buildings hinder the ability to get gigabit to the desktop, or does the ring only affect the actual connection between the buildings. I guess the connection WITHIN the building would be limited by what the routers and switches can do, right? So essentially, if I were to transfer a file within a building, it would be at gigabit speeds. However, if I were to transfer a file between buildings, it would only transfer at a max of 10 megabit/second due to the ring. Am I correct in my thinking?
