Global catalog

By serginho ·
I was presented with the following scenario:

1. User had Win2K Server PDC and bought new server.
2. Win2k3 Server has been installed to new server (connected to PDC). Migration ran smoothly (apparently).
3. User was advised to keep old server up and running for some time to make sure everything was ok.
4. User shutdown old server by it's own a few days later (that was several weeks ago).

Now, when trying to create new users, OS says it cannot contact the global catalog is not available. It creates the user but it states that it cannot be sure if the user already existed. TS and XP users are not authenticating any more (just Win98 users).

It seems to me the the migration also didn't migrate at least the schema master (other objects might not have benn migrated as well).

Can I simply remove the old server from the domain and increase domain functional level (it's in mixed mode and the only option is native)? Will this solve the problem?

Thanks!

I am guessing then, that you do not have a global catalog at all now if this function was not transferred.

I suggest you give this function to the new server.

This can be done from AD sites and services

Hope this helps

As long as the original server is available, I would power it up long enough to do 3 things:

A) transfer all FSMO roles to the Win2003 server (see reference below).
B) make the 2003 server a Global Catalog server.
C) demote the 2000 server to a regular server. It is still a Domain Controller. The best way to do this is to run DCPROMO on it again to remove the role.

Part (A) can be done after reading the following reference (remove any spaces from the link):
