While on the debian site recently, I saw that work is being done on the GNU/HURD project. There a running version, far from being up to production standards, and as of yet no proper installer, but can be got up and running. From what I can gather originally the Free Software Foundation started this project to be their open source operating system to go along with the tools they had developed, (gcc, emacs etc.) but then linux appeared and when these tools were integrated into this we then had GNU/Linux.
Is there anyone out there who has had any experience with GNU/HURD ?. Basically all of the main stream OS’s have roots that go back along way (some back as far as 1960’s 1970’s). What interests me is this a new more modern concept of an OS built on experience of computing of the last 40 years.
This also raises the following question in my mind, what if we could start with a blank piece of paper, how would we design a completely new OS. The main players, Unix Windows, Linux, Mac OSX, all have their fans but even to the most die hard fan, none are perfect, and they all have both strengths an weaknesses.
