Go global, think global but are we actin

IT teams in multinational companies engage in global projects with team members located globally. The situation is that when these projects are led by timezones not yours and we end up with teleconferences during midnights, early mornings and local holidays.

But the bottomline is to meet the project timelines. So, either we participate or risk being overlooked or forgotten.

Planning to go global means more than just action, but also a conscious effort to make sure people are engaged (notjust copied and informed) in decision making; despite the lack of timeliness or proximity from them.

This effort is always compromised, and hence, the other timezones are either 'sacrificed' or 'conveniently left out'.

I would love to find out ways to manage these situations as well as expectations.

Life and hierarchies

Unfortunately, one of the problems with global software development is the time zone offset. The organization that is paying for the project gets to set the hours they want to work. And if that organization has a pay structure that differs a lot from country to country, then chances are the highly paid people will get to choose their hours while everybody else has to adjust.

It isn't pretty but it is life and a side effect of the hierarchy of money.

To change it you need to either climbto the top of the hierarchy or prove that your time is more valuable than theirs.

Another option is to promote the concept of flex time throughout the organization. I personally wouldn't mind starting work in an IT environment at 4:00 AM in my time zone. But the powers that be insist on me being here during the core peak hours.

I hate to agree but you are absolutely right.

Especially with the statement "To change it you need to either climb to the top of the hierarchy or prove that your time is more valuable than theirs".

Some companies are flexible in compensating such odd hrs; most are not. It becomes an expectation that 'if you do not sacrifice, you lose the apple' versus 'if you sacrifice, you win more apples'.

It discriminates those who are not flexible to adapt to these timings.

Well, as much as Ican say, life is not fair and the hierachy of money does rule.
