Good tutorial for authenticated web sessions using PHP/MySQL

I’m trying to set up an online… something, I’m not sure what just yet, but it will need authenticated sessions, and my PHP programming skills haven’t gone that far yet – (I’m naive enough think my MySQL quote image generator is pretty nifty, but I suspect I’m strongly lacking) – not to mention I still need to learn the fine art of .htaccess.

I’ve Google’d up a few sites via “authenticated sessions php mysql tutorial”, and they seem to be what I want. I just want your collective opinion on what’s good, what’s bad, and what I need to watch out for.

I figure a mashup of these two sites should be good, but I want to know what worked for you guys.
