Goooo. . . . . al

I went to a local Mexican restaurant for lunch today (Sunday, June 27), and was somewhat surprised to see television sets throughout the restaurant tuned into the World Cup Soccer games, with the volume turned up so high that I had to put down my book. Moreover, it was Spanish volume, not English volume. As such, I had no idea what the announcers were saying.

Nonetheless, although I couldn’t understand what the announcers were saying, I watched with forced interest the soccer game going on between Mexico and Argentina.

The entire restaurant staff, as well as a majority of the patrons, were donning Mexican garb (shirts resembling flags), waving Mexican flags, and so on.

I ordered a combination plate, complete with a chili relleno (crispy with green chili), a cheese and onion enchilada, and a guacamole tostada. And of course, it was served with rice and beans, and a bottomless serving of chips and salsa.

(I consumed the whole thing, by the way, regardless of the fact I should have left 75 percent of the quantity unordered and/or unconsumed.)

As I was munching on my chips and salsa, Argentina scored a goal.

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooal, screamed the announcer.

After a short time, and slightly into my combination plate, Argentina scored another goal.

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooal, screamed the announcer.

Excuse me for my ignorance, but what in the H-E-Double Toothpicks is that all about?

Compared to American football or baseball, those soccer announcers emphasize a score like it’s the second coming of Christ – or maybe even the FIRST coming?

Baseball: You can kiss that baby goodbye!

American Football: Touchdown (insert your team’s name here)!

Soccer: Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooal.

I consumed my entire guacamole tostada before the guy even came up for breath!

My question is this: What in the heck is that Goooooooooooooooooooo…..al all about?
